| "'It's
remarkably wholesome,' says Rita Leistner of her latest photo series,
which captures the (perhaps inevitable) intersection of porn and televised
wrestling. The veteran documentary photographer was given full access
to Women's Extreme Wrestling and Gloow, two companies that stage matches
between Philadelphia-based wrestlers and L.A. porn stars. After WWF meets
XXX in the ring, competitors doff their costumes and a different kind
of tussling ensues. The league is mostly women; the porn is strictly girl-on-girl.
Everything's taped for pay-per-view TV and home video. "Leistner's entrance into this world is a story for the grandkids: commissioned to photograph a bar mitzvah, she started chatting up the ceremony's videographer, who revealed that he shot female-wrestling matches. When Leistner showed a journalistic interest, he offered to bring her along as his assistant. 'The very first gig I went on, I found myself in a limo shooting hardcore porn,' she says. 'It was one of those life moments when you ask yourself, "How did I get here?" And then I just started shooting.'" |
